University of Jamestown Prepares for First Trip to Cuba

The University of Jamestown continues to provide educational opportunities abroad.

In 2019, The University will be adding a special topics course to the Spring schedule called “Exploring the Cuban Healthcare System.” The course will have a group travel from the University to Havana, Cuba for the first time.

The eight day trip will be held during the University’s spring break. Assistant Professor of Foreign Language Alexandru Lefter says the course will feature a look into Cuba’s unique history with Latin America due to the 1959 revolution.

Lefter says the trip will be beneficial to students of all majors as well as any interested community member.

Lefter and Assistant Professor of Nursing Penny Briese, will lead the group in the travels. A class will meet once a week in the evening five times before the departure and twice again after returning. While in Cuba, students will journal their experiences, visit with locals and institutions and debrief at the end of the day.

“Because this is an experiential learning course, insights from working professionals in other fields would further enrich our travelers’ experience comparing the two countries.”
